The other end of this prison side. When the earthquake struck, the prison suffered enough cracks and damage that, after the guards took off to look for their families, some 4000 prisoners escaped, some of them even trying to burn the hated edifice down, but to no avail.

Prison transportation vehicle

The main entrance to the prison. Although the prison is still damaged, one corner is safe enough to house several hundred prisoners.

Back on the road again, we drive by a tire store.

This man is an amputee from the earthquake, one of some 22,000 I believe the figure is.

A pharmacy, damaged but still functioning

The Bank of Nova Scotia, Scotiabank, was one of the few banks left halfway intact. Port-au-Prince is or was home to many of the international banking conglomerates such as Citibank and Bank of America gracing, or should I say, cursing the planet.

A crowded downtown street

Open markets galore everywhere

You will often see vendors set up right amidst the rubble.

Note this wildly leaning building in the background of this market.

Checking the wares

You will see thousands of young men on motor scooters in the city.

We are beginning to see the remnants of the great Catholic Cathedral of Our Lady of the Assumption in Port-au-Prince. The cathedral was badly damaged by the earthquake.

A closer look at the great central nave of the cathedral. That the entire edifice didn't collapse is a tribute to Gothic architecture.

Going all the way around to the other side, here is the facade of the cathedral.
