Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame,
"Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore,
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door".
The soul of America glows with these words. But will we now dim the torch and send the huddled masses to find breathing room elsewhere? As we tire of the tired and the poor, will we lose our soul? Soul-searching questions that deserve serious attention.
