Voters have every right to dump Governor Paterson next year, and according to the polls, they will. But when voters pass judgment on Paterson, they should be armed with the most honest and accurate information available. They should compare the actions taken versus the alternatives. They should consider whether other candidates, principally Attorney General Andrew Cuomo, could do a better job. The answer to this question cannot be answered, because Cuomo has never been Governor facing such daunting odds. Should he become Governor, however, I wish him the very best of luck. (Incidentally, much credit is due to Mr. Cuomo for acting honorably during Governor Paterson's troubles. He has refrained from addressing any future Gubernatorial campaign.)
The President owes the Governor a public apology for embarrassing manner in which he's handled his message not to run to the Governor.
Win or lose, Paterson's tried. He's had successes and failures. Sometimes, that's the best you can ask for.
