The idea for a new bridge in and of itself is not necessarily a bad one provided the rules are followed and the lift bridge is maintained. The lift bridge is only eighty years old; it is a short span beam and pylon bridge and was overbuilt to high standards. It is picturesque, unique, historical and beautiful. Its destruction would be a wasteful national catastrophe. To destroy a historic landmark in the name of greed mitigates any potential good. Any growth that a new bridge might bring will be offset by the loss of jobs and revenue in Stillwater.
Besides Ms. Bachmann is a big believer in pay as you go government, so why not build a toll bridge? Do a study and see if the traffic will justify the loan repayment by collecting tolls. That's freedom as Ms. Bachmann describes it. Let those who wish to By-pass Stillwater pay for the privilege. Most importantly keep the Federal government out of the affair. I feel certain Ms. Bachmann already tires of the hot breath of the Federal government breathing down her neck. If as Ms. Bachmann maintains, this project has true merit then raise the money through the municipal bond market. Then build the Michele Bachmann memorial toll bridge.
Who knows, maybe the J. P. Morgan bank would buy the new bridge as they bought the Chicago skyway and then the state could turn a quick profit.
We all know that a toll bridge will never be built because Missy wants a free bridge, a free money, big government bridge. Toll bridges stifle growth and this bridge is more about developers, fast food and convenience store operators making a buck than getting traffic across a river. Come hell or high water Missy wants a bridge, even if it destroys her own scenic picturesque home town in the process. Even if it destroys the tourism industry which helps the little town to flourish and even if it goes against every principle Michele Bachmann has built her career upon, Missy wants a bridge because there is money to be made. Missy wants a bridge and she wants you to pay for it.
"I don't know where they're going to get all this money because we are running out of rich people in this country." Rep. Michele Bachmann
