When agriculture started about 10,000 B.C., a few of us hoarded some of the food that we grew, since farming produces a surplus of food, that surplus can be put to unnatural uses.
These few were able to use hoarded food to pay some of us not to produce any food at all, just stand guard over what the Big Man was hoarding.
And thus he invented the army - voila!
The rest of us understood force, but not so much the reason for hoarding
or why the hoarder was considered our boss. And why some of us would choose to enforce this.
This is where priests entered history, is public relations agents/lobbyists who advertised the hoarder not just as king, but as god on earth, or at least descended from someone on high,
who thus had to be obeyed and given home of your produce as a sacrifice, a tax, to keep him appeased and from smiting your ass, thus creating the religious protection racket.
The hoarder became a god-king with an army to protect him literally
and a priesthood/Public Relations firm, whose job was to protect him figuratively.
But the Big Man wanted to hoard even more, even if it was somebody else's.
And he wanted to keep us from thinking about how much he had actually hoarded, why that was supposed to be a good thing and why would we want to support it.
So he projected his wishes and plans on to some people who lived across the river, who had their own god-king, army and PR-priests, and were probably just minding their business.
He told the people on his side of the river that "those people" were coming for their property, maybe their daughters, killing them in the process,
and voila! he invented Outside Enemies -
The Commies, (the hippies), the terrorists, (the "libruls"). And by waving the flag and fear in their face, he riveted attention not on him, but on "them"
and even got people to support his campaign
To steal someone else's land and resources on the pretext of protecting "national security" and he got some of the people to steal stuff for him,
er, I mean, they stole it for god and for country.
Today religion is figuratively practiced by the masses while for 12,000 years the "elite" have worshipped the money, since to literally follow Jesus, Mohammed or Buddha would ruin the unbroken system of profit and hegemony.
The sheep accept their "betters" as the shepherd and themselves as the obedient sheep, who follow where ever they're directed to go, unquestioning, after selected leaders.
The sheep make the "elite" lifestyle possible, and if the sheep balk there's that Outside Enemy, to sheep will defend the "elite's", er, the national interest, with racism and jingoism that passes for patriotism.
Though this brings the sheep together to serve their "betters', they're "rugged individuals" who won't bond with each other. And by tossing some crumbs for them to fight over they'll fight for their "betters" right to plunder.
The sheep will also protect their "betters" from those whose resources have been seized for the empire, sacrificing their children and those of "the enemy" allowing the children of the "elite" to survive.
