Imagine doctors, nurses, pharmacists, instrument sterilizers, operating room floor moppers who might object -- on moral or religious grounds -- the use of anesthesia, by-passes, prescribing birth control, performing vasectomies, artificial limbs, tonsillectomies, drawing blood, transfusions, organ replacement, toenail removal, setting broken bones, reconstructive surgery…even inserting contact lenses. Don’t laugh. A friend and a cousin of mine, both had fathers who objected strongly to my friend getting contacts and my cousin having her nose bobbed. Both objected using the old strong moral and religious grounds bullcrap ploy. Of course, they were both assh**es, too. And both, while not knowing each other, they said exactly the same things to their respective daughters: If God would have meant for you to be able to see, he would have given you good eyes. If God meant for you to have a small nose, he would have given you one.
Being totally unreasonable and not heeding their daughters’ plaintive pleas, both girls saved their money and got what they so desperately wanted for themselves.
Doctors or any support medical personnel who have objections to any procedures should get out of the medical business. For them to practice medicine is the same as if only Christian Scientists were to become doctors, hang out shingles, then refuse to treat anyone, or their treatments consisted of liberal doses of Bible reading.
To you OB-GYNs who object to practicing your love of women by refusing to perform abortions: Get the hell out of medicine, and become plumbers where the only pipes you can harm are made of PVCs or copper.
