One last factor regarding chord changes: Absolutely one of the most important factors in all music is the BASS LINE. The ability to hear a bass line and use it creatively along with beautiful chords is a hallmark of true musicianship!
Indeed, Sir Donald Tovey, a famous British musicologist once made a supremely insightful observation:
"You can tell a musician by his basses!"
The next time you listen to ANY music, try to hear what the basses are doing. (Strangely enough, many otherwise fine musicians do not necessarily have good "bass ears.")
This brings us back to the title of this piece:
"I love the music but I don't know why""
It applies to a person who has a keen and sensitive reaction to lush harmonies and chord progressions without understanding that the those thrills emanate from beautiful treatment of the music's harmonic element.
Such an individual might well have been a successful musician (instead of a successful brain surgeon.)
