From personal experience living in China among the Chinese, it can be quite relaxing, and at the same time show perspicacity and endear oneself to one's host, if at some point the guest makes it known that he is aware that he is a barbarian, not only in their eyes, but in truth.
Accepting that the Chinese feel all foreigners are barbarians, no matter how warm, charming, and pleasant their welcome, is not kowtowing. The Chinese love "their' barbarians for their freshness and strength. They have been conquered by barbarians with whom they subsequently integrated with and saw the invaders become Chinese. It appears to be a 5,000 year old extended Chinese family cultivation of the idea of appreciating themselves in a central position in the world for their civilization having been the most advanced over so many centuries. (Their two character word for China is Zhong Guo: center country.)
[The author finds them confident, content, gracious, and supremely enjoyable to live among.]
