The gallery erupted in applause.
Joseph Nye Welch (1890-1960) was born in Iowa and that state would do well to honor their native-born son by remembering his courage and moral outrage in the face of political demagoguery. So would the rest of America.
Yes; history repeats itself but here's the deal: the wolf never comes in the same sheep's clothing twice. The trick is to recognize the wolf's new disguise. We're living in a time of Neo-McCarthyism but this time 'round there are many McCarthy's and the victims of their hysteria and hate are not just Communists or socialists or hidden jihadists around every curve and bend. No, this time 'round it's not just the poor, the homeless, the jobless, homosexuals or minorities or immigrants either. This time 'round the net includes women as well as just about everyone else. It's truly hard to imagine because one has to really wonder who's left: are there enough people left to support these Neo-McCarthy's?
I don't know; I'm truly puzzled by what I'm watching all around me. I'm afraid as well. But most of all I'm furious. In a few short months we've gone from talking about black children working as janitors to state-sponsored medicalized rape. Who but the scum of the earth would go after poor black children and frightened pregnant women?
I keep waiting for a man or woman, or even a crowd, to stand up and challenge just even one of these crazy bastards and ask once again, " Have you no sense of decency, sir? At long last, have you left no sense of decency?"
Let me repeat that:
" Have you no sense of decency, sir? At long last, have you left no sense of decency? "
