Is it pixilation?

Is it nanotechnology?

Is it Los Angeles in smog?

Is it a circuit board?

My longtime friend, artist Francis Sporer, emailed this to me just moments ago. What it actually is, is surprising.

He sent me this link to google maps

with the subject line:  “Under the surface of a Peruvian Lake”

and he said:  “Go here, enlarge, reduce, etc. This is amazing. What you are looking at is Laguna de Paca, Peru. Into a lake and surrounding countryside. Look at what's under the lake surface by zooming in and out. Investigate other Peruvian or S. American lakes if you want. There are others that show this incredible evidence of ancient human habitation ... I don't have any idea the age of this site/city!”

I went to the link, zoomed in, and wanted to get a clearer look, so I bumped up the contrast in Photoshop, and rotated it about 4 degrees clockwise, which resulted in the image you see above.

I emailed Francis back to ask who sent this to him, and he told me that he had just found it, moments before, while googling around Peru. Wow, I’m glad I’m on his short list!

He said that, Janis, a friend he is visiting, had just told him that her friend, Kathy,  scans GoogleEarth and found a bunch of these.   So Frances started doing some armchair archaeology, and told me, "most I’ve looked ‘into’ are black or have natural features, not manmade. I found this one ‘accidentally’ on my own while talking with her here.”

As Alice noted, “Curiouser and curiouser.”

UPDATE TO ARTICLE: (ON AUGUST 22, from Janis):

“I sent Francis to the google map, telling him about the cities underneath the lakes of the Andes that my friend has located. I am very happy that he sent it out to you, so that others could see them, as well.  I would like for you to have the name of the woman who is responsible for  so many of these kinds of finds. This is her livelihood and she is an incredible hunter, as these maps attest. Her name is Kathy Wills, wife of the healer, Jerry Wills. The two of them have been exploring ancient sites in Peru for many years and helped lead an ARE (Association for Research and Enlightenment) trip there a few years ago with my husband, Henry, and I. While Jerry gets a lot of attention, because of what he is able to do - he is a genuine LIGHT healer - Kathy's hard work is often overlooked. She can be reached at xpeditions-owner@googlegroups.com  or through her husband's e-mail address of  j@jerrywills.com
