How will genocide recede into the past? One possible antidote, we were told, is proaction; the minute such an event seems in the making--and here the press must take on a far more aggressive role--there must be decisive intervention. As with the most dread diseases in the world, early detection is far more likely to lead to a cure.
If only four people attended Lemkin's funeral, he did receive some acknowledgement and official awards during his lifetime, but most important, the world every day names his brainchild, a small word with huge repercussions. He was too busy to live a normal life.
Forcing an evil spirit to name itself makes it disappear. Lemkin was no mystic, but when the power of his word acquires needed strength and is uttered by the agents rather than the victims and witnesses, we will have made significant progress.
That more of a solution rests with other heroic giants, like Mandela or Gandhi, was another conclusion reached by the panel participants. But so few so-effective activist/leaders appear and so seldom can they act that hope, at the bottom of the barrel, must lead the way toward more.
