In William Blum's excellent book Rogue State, he illustrates the position in which Rule of Law-loving Americans now find themselves:
It's as if the national security establishment feels that it has an inalienable right to listen in; as if there had been a constitutional amendment, applicable to the entire world, stating that "Congress shall make no law abridging the freedom of the government to intercept the personal communications of citizens."
And the Fourth Amendment had been changed to read: "Persons shall be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, except in cases of national security, real or alleged."
This is no exaggeration. This is the state of our nation. This is what our House of Representatives just voted to become law.
This cannot be allowed to stand. This is not my America. That's freakin' Sean Hannity's America!
Anyone who has read anything that I have written will not have found a harsh word about Barack Obama. I have supported him and defended him at every turn, and I truly believe he is our best chance for real, substantive change that we desperately need. He is infinitely better than John McCain, and he knows right from wrong.
But if Barack Obama does not cast his vote against this abomination to everything good that this country has stood for, if he cannot stand against something as destructive, as outright treasonous as this Orwellian piece of infectious bile - he will forever have lost my trust.
Show me, Senator. I'm begging you - show me.
It is simply not worth another second of my consideration or time to work for an American Presidency that would tolerate something so despicably un-American.
