Clarence Thomas and his backers have enjoyed a long and prosperous reign since his confirmation 20 years ago.
His power was dramatized Sept. 21 with the late-night execution of Troy Davis in Georgia. Thomas is the Supreme Court justice who acts as the high court's liaison to the federal appellate court region encompassing Georgia. He is one of the court's leading advocates for denying appeals from death row, part of the oft-times dangerous and cruel constitutional theory that he and his backers have pushed from the start.
The final chapters of their story -- and ours -- may be still to come.
