Awakening these people to the better angels of their nature won't be
quick. It won't be easy. And our efforts certainly won't be
appreciated.
The change will occur subtly and invisibly, as the vibrations of moral
truth get absorbed into the psychic and cultural systems. Indeed,
it may be through the transmission between generations that the
constructive impact gets absorbed.
But regardless of how long it takes, or how thankless the task may
sometimes seem, the work of making this change must be
undertaken.
We must heal what's pathological in the American body politic.
This nation is not well. The malady is too serious not to be
addressed.
Our whole capacity to navigate our way wisely into the future depends
on our successfully subduing this politics that's all about power, that
wantonly wields fear-mongering lies, that does not have regard for our
shared values and shared purposes.
Large swaths of history have hinged on far smaller things than
this. World wars have been the effects of more minor causes than
this darkness on the American right.
We should undertake this task as if the future of the nation depends on
it, as if, indeed, the well-being of life on earth depends on it.
For well they might.
