Finally, Western women have a duty not only to inspire their oppressed counterparts in the oppressed regions of the world but also to actively advocate on their behalf. There can be no democracy, even in the midst of great economic strides, if half of a country's population is in bondage and servitude. Modern leadership is not about wielding the sword or using 2,000-year old dogmas found in religious texts as the basis for 21st century rule.
It is no coincidence then that in all the countries where the plight of women has improved significantly the political system is basically democratic. When there is free choice and when every citizen has access to the same level of services then artificially erected barriers that disadvantage some sections of society are automatically dismantled. Freedom of speech, freedom of thought, freedom to choose one's profession, all articles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights , are only possible in a genuine democracy.
Likewise women rights are only possible in a democracy where enshrined checks and balances guarantee these rights that are part of society's laws.
