In politics, we have become supporters of a hierarchy because that is what we have witnessed over the past few hundred year. An alpha-dog at the top to be the decider, the enforcer, the leader. But in a horizontal government structure leadership is not readily apparent; there is no one decider, no top-dog, instead we have joint decisions made by informed experts in their field, sharing accountability and authority.
Perhaps this is the telling difference between the Right and the Left. And it explains why the Left has not been able to organize enough to overthrow the hierarchy. While the Right is organized like a military operation; top-down, the Left is still trying to define itself as a horizontal organization. Shared responsibilities, shared accountability, and shared leadership is too foreign to the average American to support and understand. America is a society of militaristic reasoning; Egalitarian, shared leadership and Perceptive decision making are still years away.
