The President delivered remarks in the Rose Garden of the White House on the United States Senate Finance Committee's vote to approve health insurance reform legislation. Transcript Video

The President, the First Lady Michelle Obama, Vice President Joe Biden and Dr. Jill Biden attended "In Performance at the White House: Fiesta Latina," a concert celebrating Hispanic musical heritage. The President delivered brief remarks at the beginning of the concert. The concert was televised on October 15th on public broadcasting stations nationwide as part of WETA Washington, D.C.'s "In Performance at the White House" series, and was also broadcast on Telemundo on October 18th and on V-me, the national Spanish language network partnered with public television, on December 25th. Participants include Marc Anthony, Jimmy Smits, Pete Escovedo, Gloria Estefan, Jose Feliciano, George Lopez, Thalia, Tito "El Bambino", the Bachata music group Aventura, and the Chicano rock band Los Lobos, with Sheila E. leading the house band. The event was streamed live on www.WhiteHouse.gov. Among the President's remarks, he said, "In the end, what makes Latin music great is the same thing that's always made America great: the unique ability to celebrate our differences while creating something new; to realize that although we may come from different backgrounds and different cultures, what unites us will always be stronger than what divides us. In the words of Gloria Estefan who's here tonight, "The most beautiful things in this country have the flavor of other places.""

The President he has nominated Rosanna Peterson to the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Washington. Peterson currently serves on the faculty of the Gonzaga University School of Law. Source&Bio

The President nominated Sharon Lubinski for U.S. Marshal for the District of Minnesota. Lubinski is the Assistant Chief of Police at the Minneapolis Police Department, where she has served for 20 years. Source&Bio

George Apostolakis, of Massachusetts, to be a Member of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission for the term of five years expiring June 30, 2014

Elizabeth M. Harman, of Maryland, to be an Assistant Administrator of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, Department of Homeland Security

Eleni Tsakopoulos Kounalakis, of California, to be Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United States of America to the Republic of Hungary.

Sharon Jeanette Lubinski, of Minnesota, to be United States Marshal for the District of Minnesota for the term of four years

William D. Magwood, IV, of Maryland, to be a Member of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission for the remainder of the term expiring June 30, 2010

William D. Magwood, IV, of Maryland, to be Member of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission for the term of five years expiring June 30, 2015. (Reappointment)

Rosanna Malouf Peterson, of Washington, to be United States District Judge for the Eastern District of Washington

Peter Alan Prahar, of Virginia, a Career Member of the Senior Foreign Service, Class of Counselor, to be Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the United States of America to the Federated States of Micronesia.

Christina Reiss, of Vermont, to be United States District Judge for the District of Vermont Source
