Numbers Rule, But It's Still Too Soon For Hillary To Drop Out

Numbers rule!

And it’s no secret, I’m not particularly a numbers person.

I’ve yet to figure out “magic” numbers in baseball; I do the next best thing, I take Vin Scully’s word for it and rely on his understanding it.

Not until the magic number reaches something like “three”, with two games (or is it four?) left to play, can I get anywhere near understanding the action.

G’head. Laugh.  I’m perfectly content to wait and hear someone say, “The Dodger won the National League pennant…or not.”

The same is true for the number of popular votes, number of delegates (committed or not), the number of committed super delegates, and the number of uncommitted supers garnered in the Democratic primaries.

For some reason, counting delegates -- even with all the variables -- it’s easier to follow than baseball’s magic number.

Or … MSNBC’s Chuck Todd has done one helluvah job explaining the numbers and all the variables.  The other alternative is that I’ve heard him explain it so many times, it’s sunk in and managed to penetrate my stubbornly mulish, math-resistant brain cells.

From what I’ve gleaned, mathematically Hillary doesn’t have a chance in hell of capturing the Democratic nomination, and the calls for her to drop out are echoing throughout the country.

Other than skullduggery, chicanery and out-and-out bribery her goose is toast.

But drop out now with only thirty days to go before the last primary in Puerto Rico?  I don’t think so.

There are too many reasons why she shouldn’t, the least of which is for people like me who don’t give a rat’s ass about “magic” numbers, but want to see the season played out to the very last game…or in this case…the very last primary.

Anything can happen between now and then.

She’s also amassed a respectable number of delegates and I’m sure she’s going to use them for some sort of political leverage for whatever her end game is.

Dropping out now would also cause many to call her a defeatist when she’s worked so hard to paint herself as a tenacious bulldog when she wants to be and a fighter through the last round.

Dropping out now also might bollix up future senate campaigns where she’s pretty much assured a lifetime Senate seat and wielder of immense power, or her chances of being the governor of New York State … also not too shabby, but it is term-limited.
