This sounds a lot like the arguments from the extremist politicians, but this is to show how false these choices are. I don't claim to be an expert but I have been in the system thirty years and have experienced everything expounded by the false pundits. The UK healthcare system does NOT cost less I have a friend who works for the NHS and she gets a substantial chunk of her pay deducted to fund the NHS, as does every worker in the UK. It is easily the equivalent of any health insurance payment you would make in the US, and probably more than some. Waste also runs rampant. There was a stastic published in a newspaper there a while back that said there was something like 9 management level employees for every non management worker. A sad case of there being too many chiefs and not enough Indians. All these unnecessary management positions are created as a result of patronage. Support the right politicians, get a management job with the NHS. That's how it works there and it's how it would work here if it was ever implemented. by

Reply to Reader on Health Care Costs I appreciate all comments but using data from a friend may not be as scientific as large data collections. I enclose two articles regarding this at the end. I fully understand the huge buracracy and speed of the British system but there is even more waste in our system and there is plenty of buracracy if you are underinsured or uninsured. Losing 30% of health care dollars in the US private system counts as waste when Medicare gives better management at 3% and one system coast to coast with one set of basic rules. In the Canadian and Medicare system only the payer is government. Providers don't have to participate in Medicare. It also allows any willing provider as does the UK system but the private system gives you a small book of preferred providers and a more limited group of hospitals, no freedom at all. Away from your home base the copay is much higher. The costs are greater in the US and this is well documented in many studies, in fact, twice as high in the US with the worst care. The quality of care has been argued but statistics from WHO and many others reveal the borttom line. Infant mortality is much higher in the US. Longevity is less in the UK. There is less morbidity from chronic illness in the UK and maybe the most important-there is not a large subclass without access to care in the UK. Face it. Our system is very broken and the Canadian and UK system have their problems as well but ours just doesn't work for 25%-50% of Americans. It is clear that you have not had a devastating illness without good insurance. I have seen the inside for 30+ years and it is heartbreaking to have to look for care for these people. It is easy to just write off your part but finding others to do the same is difficult since they get asked often. It is the advice of Bush to go to the ER that shows the unbelievable ignorance that we are dealing with. file:///Users/hwmcadoo/Desktop/ANTI BUSH/NEJM -- Market-Based Failure -- A Second Opinion on U.S. Health Care Costs.webarchive file:///Users/hwmcadoo/Desktop/ANTI%20BUSH/HEALTH%20CARE%20COMPARED.html by
