Congress recesses in about a week- August 6th- Sept 3.
In the past month or two, Bush has given himself the power to seize the property, without notice, of anyone engaging in activities protesting the occupation of Iraq. He's given himself the power to declare martial law in the event of any sort of national "emergency". He's destabilized the relationship with Russia by planning a missile defense system in Europe. He's reiterated the use of harsh interrogations. He's escalating the rhetoric against Iran. His people are warning of a coming "terrorist attack".
Impeaching Bush and Cheney is the only way to stop the accelerating march toward all-out war and fascism.
Congress has about a week to start impeachment proceedings,.
But Congress is refusing, still refusing, and instead, is selling the American people down the river. Rep.John Conyers, who head the House Judiciary Committee and who decides whether impeachment hearings will be held, had 30-40 impeachment advocates arrested in his office this past Monday.
Instead of coming to grips with tyranny, instead of standing up for the US Constitution and the citizens whom they are supposed to represent, Congress is ignoring all of the edicts and warnings in the first paragraph of this essay. Instead, they are camoflaging their lack of action with impressive sounding actions that have no substance.
Conyers is bringing contempt charges against two former members of the White House team, Miers and Bolten. This sounds ferocious, but actually lacks teeth, since it requires the cooperation of Bush's Justice Department.
Patrick Leahy, Chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee has issued a subpoena against Karl Rove. How exciting! No doubt Rove will ignore it, just as Miers and Bolten ignored theirs.
The Conyers/Leahy dog and pony show is simply running out the clock until Congress recesses - August 6th- Sept 3rd. We are all hoping against hope that our Representatives, whom we elected to stop Bush, will save us. Instead, they are entertaining us, fooling us, with their brave show of force that lacks substance.
Once Congress goes home, the "unitary executive" will have no oversight and no distractions for a whole month.
During this time Bush and Cheney could:Nuke Iran and ignite WW III
Confiscate the property of antiwar activists
Start martial law under almost any pretext
Anthrax the Capitol so Congress can't reconvene
Other mischief
