Whatever Happened to Discernment?

Tell A Friend

October 3, 2007

It is hard enough today as Christians to advance the cause of Christ without having to deal with the political forces that have hijacked Christianity for their own purposes. When those forces however continue to dupe well-intended Christians who then use their positions of authority to support such political ideologies it makes it that much more difficult. Case in point was a dramatic “urgent” email warning from Pastor Frances Lloyd of Texas. Pastor Lloyd who refers to herself as a “prophetess” sent the email because she had felt “something big” was going to happen and she urged her readers to “stay away from crowds and down town areas.” While admitting that several renowned “predictions” have recently failed to come to pass, Pastor Lloyd assured her readers that this time things were different.

The first such proof was a vague reference to consistent threats from the “enemy”, which government “insiders” considered credible. Never mind the blind acceptance that any reasonable enemy would broadcast their plans in such a manner. Never mind the blind acceptance of intelligence from a government that has consistently proven to manipulate intelligence and use fear as a weapon. The gullibility factor cannot be ignored. There needs to be discernment.

Her first example of support was a recent radio guest on the Glenn Beck Show, who was a supposed “US Security Expert.” She then details that the “expert” says they will attack our school children, especially 7th grade and below. Beck chimed in then about recent thefts of school buses and radios, despite the fact that this was a localized incident in the Houston area alone. Not content with just revealing this diabolical plot, Lloyd continued that there would be a secondary plot to kill the parents in parking lots with car bombs and additional shootings after they gathered together at the attacked schools.

The more frightening aspect of this is the blind acceptance of things people say and then the transference of it to something “God” is warning us about. Discernment is listed biblically as a gift. It is a gift that I wish people like Pastor Lloyd would wield more effectively. Well-intended Christians receive this email alert and send it out immediately to everyone they know, and so on and so on. The fear and panic that results are not biblical either.

Let us first take a closer look at her source. Glenn Beck is a shill for the government, not a reporter. His job is to parrot the administration line, period. Cut from the Sean Hannity mold, Beck is also a poor choice for a Christian to be believing let alone even listening to. Here are some of the documented highlights of Mr. Beck, who is Mormon for the record:

1) Referred to President Jimmy Carter as a “waste of skin.”

2) Referred to Mexican immigrants as “dirt bags.”

3) Referred to Katrina victims as “scumbags.”

4) Referred to Cindy Sheehan as a “prostitute.”

5) Suggested using nuclear weapons against parts of the Middle East and Venezuela.

6) Refers to Hillary Clinton as “The Antichrist” and a “stereotypical b*tch.”

7) Was caught fabricating news about Clinton to smear her campaign.

Here are some notable quotes from Glenn Beck:

1) "I find this guy [Michael Berg, father of slain journalist Nick Berg] despicable. Everything in me says that. The want to be a better person today than I was yesterday says he's a dad, he's grieving, but I don't buy that. I'm sorry, I don't buy it. I think he is grieving, but I think he's a scumbag as well. I don't like this guy at all."

2) "But the second thought I had when I saw these people [Hurricane Katrina survivors], and they had to shut down the Astrodome and lock it down, I thought: I didn't think I could hate victims faster than the 9-11 victims."

Thanks Anthony

When candidate Bush claimed his favorite philosopher was Jesus; I believed him.

THAT DAY we call 9/11 was the beginning of the end of my naivete, for President Bush doesn't know jack about JC's philosophy:

"The Peacemakers shall be called the children of God."-Jesus, Matthew 5:9

NOT those that bomb, torture or occupy others.

Jesus also said:

"FEAR NOT!" and

"You shall know the truth and the truth will set you free."

Thanks for your truth telling Anthony for in solidarity "we have it in our power to begin the world again"-Tom Paine

Hello WAWA

Hi Eileen,

I also was deceived temporarily by Bush.

I  learned my lesson!

Look at people's fruits, their past way of living, etc. and you will see

the pattern.

Very Refreshing

Anthony,

Your article was very refreshing. I can tell fom your words that we are very

much on the same page. It is indeed difficult to spread the message of Jesus

with all the counterfeit Christianity out there. Yes... we have been warned

about "wolves in sheep's clothing", and they are in great abundance.

You are also correct how this "bowing down to fear" is also non-Biblical.

Too many lazy-minded, materialism addicted "Christians" out there. Christians need to act more like the Jedi in Star Wars instead of just a bunch

of bumbling sheep. Do I dare use the word "righteous living" on this forum?

That's what we need more "righteous living". Not in the "holier than thou sense", but in the sense of "raising the  bar" intellectually, physically, and

spiritually.

God Bless,
Bob

A writer is a rogue goose. All other gees fly in a flock formation; every goose knows his place and time for honking. The rogue goose is undisciplined. He leaves the formation indiscriminately to have a look at it from aside. He roams back and forth, takes a peep at the leader, honks a little bit from behind, distracts everyone and writes on what he sees. Time passes and as he wants to return back to his place he discovers someone else there. Thus he either has to wait until they land for rest...

OK, then why

none of the real Churches has  Mr. Beck dressed as a Devil to put a picture on display? One such picture and  he will be ruined, right?

Why no  one protests when delusional Beck appears on the show EVERY DAY?

Folks, I love you all. But in the interest of the truth, admit, please, that 90% of your flock loves what he says, thinks that way and have neither hearts nor brains.  And Mr. Beck knows that. And Pastor Lloyd knows that too.

NOT OK!

It is way past time for Jesus to be liberated from the right wing who have made him into their image!

Jesus was never a Christian; in fact that term was not even coined until the days of Paul. Although no Christian, Jesus was a social justice, radical revolutionary Palestinian devout Jewish Road Warrior who challenged the job security of the Temple Priests by teaching the people they did not need to pay the priests for ritual baths or sacrificing livestock to be OK with God-for God LOVED them just as they were; sinners, outcasts, diseased, cripples, poor, oppressed widows, orphans, refugees and prisoners all enduring under Roman Occupation.

What got Jesus crucified was disturbing the status quo of the ROF/Roman Occupying Forces by teaching such subversive concepts that Caesar only had power because God allowed it and that God was on the side of the sinners, outcasts, diseased, cripples, poor, oppressed widows, orphans, refugees and prisoners all enduring under Roman Occupation.

The early followers and lovers of Jesus were called members of THE WAY; being THE WAY he taught one must be to be his sister and brother; which is that one is to do the WILL of the Father. It was the Hebrew prophet Micah who reminded the people, "What does God require? He has told you o'man! Be just, be merciful, and walk humbly with your Lord." -Micah 6:8

2,000 years ago the cross had NO symbolic religious meaning. When Jesus said: "Pick up your cross and follow me" he was issuing a political statement. 2,000 years ago the main road to Jerusalem was filled with crucified rebels, dissidents, outlaws, outcasts and any other sinner, outcast, diseased, cripple, poor, oppressed person who disturbed the status quo of the elite ROF.

Admit

I really don't know these 2 pastors.

I have shied away from the churchy crowd.

You are probably right though.... most will blindly support their

pastor. Big difference between churchianity and spirituality.

Good article, Anthony!

Loved all the Beck quotes!

Bush never ever fooled me though...

Unfortunately, this won't be the last time the unsavory types hide behind religion or turn it into their own crooked device!  That goes across the board doesn't it? -any religion can be used contrary to the teachings of it and it's partial human nature to be somewhat hypocritical if you are living the unexamined life, isn't it?  Christ represents, to me, a notion of hope to his followers and not so much a figure who is permissive of fearmongering and using his name to spread intolerance or to even personally gain in this world.  Those who would abuse his name in that way I would call 'parasites'.

What was it Gandhi said?

"I like your Christ... not so much his followers"

Cheers,

Bid

Fooled

I was fooled because I became spiritually lazy.

It was a good wake-up call for me.

Never again.
