STATUE OF LIBERTY

Statue of Liberty, where did you come from and who put you there,

While you stand for freedom, do you at times smell the fear in the air.

When your leaders talk of war and terror, they always seem to mention you,

Statue of Liberty, what do you think your country should do.

You're a statue made of stone and yet people claim they've seen you cry,

They place tears upon your face when it's your people's turn to die.

Oh, Statue of Liberty, proud lady with your arm raised in the air,

Do you see what's been happening, and I wonder if you care.

Statue of Liberty, grand lady of freedom you seem so unmoved,

Do you see the things you stand for being quickly and discreetly removed.

And I wonder if at times you close your eyes, I wonder how you feel,

And I cannot help but think at times, perhaps those tears are real.

Statue of Liberty, were you watching the day the attacks took place,

Proud lady, made of stone how did you wipe the tears from your face.

Did you cry for those who died on that fateful September Day,

We, my wife (Ros) and I work in the disability sector.  We are passionate about being real in a world that seems determined not to face the reality of life today.  My poetry is sometimes personal, sometimes topical and I write also out of frustration at the injustice and hypocrisy we see daily.  The poems are written in the hope that people's hearts and minds will be opened to the realities today.

Death of our Lady

Blood runs slow on the coldest of nights-

from wounds of words, wicked, precise.

Shattered, forsaken she falls to the ground-

no shots - no screams - no sound.

Blood runs slow on the coldest of nights-

from wounds of words, daggers of ice.
