Solitude accompanies me at every turn.

I welcome the silence that descends within, drowning out the voices that refuse to let me be.

Darkness comes. It blankets and shrouds every crevice of light. I retreat deeper into the abyss of nothing.

I yearn to reach the point of no return. But the journey there is arduous and taxing.

To nowhere. To nothing. To where the damned roam free and the past is held at bay.

I need so badly to belong somewhere.

I hear voices in the distance. I hold the palms of my hands to both ears, willing them to stop. I start rocking on my knees, back and forth. The voices will not stop. Why will they not stop. For goodness sake make them stop. They become louder. Closer.

A scream pierces the still, silent, darkened room.

A door flies open.

Bodies rush in.

Light. Someone has switched on my light.

I turn my face to the wall.

Dark but oh so familiar. Inviting. So safe. Home.
