Your letter to the editor in today's ArDemGaz was so accurate and so fair, I am astonished Meredith Oakley chose to sneak it by the hideous phony,a.k.a. Paul Greenberg, and allow your words to be shared with the tiny minority of us Arkansans
who are not clinically brain dead! :


Examine facts before judging

Recently, your crack editorial staff, in the new conservative tradition of the preemptive strike based on misinformation, attacked an article in a forthcoming issue of Rolling Stone without having read the article. Stunning.

Well, my copy of Rolling Stone showed up in my mailbox today and, call me a crazy liberal, but I actually bothered to read it. [The article] was written by a prominent Princeton professor of history, Dr. Sean Wilentz, and it is a pretty fair assessment not only of George W. Bush, but of the current state of historical analysis and of the criteria used to determine the effectiveness of any presidency. In fact, it finds significant common ground with the ultraconservative editors of this newspaper with regard to which presidents belong in that ignoble bottom tier of the presidency. But you 'd have to actually read the article to know that.

Anyway, thank you for yet another lesson in critical thinking that I can pass on to my students. I always tell them to take critics with a grain of that proverbial salt, especially the ones who would protest a movie they have not seen, or those who would burn a book or trash a scholarly article they have not read.
