By Paul Kruger (about the author) Page 1 of 2 page(s)
For OpEdNews: Paul Kruger - Writer I wish to start with two famous quotes that Mr. Bush may not have learned. "Give me Liberty, or give me Death!" ~ Patrick Henry Those who desire to give up freedom in order to gain security will not have, nor do they deserve, either one. ~ Benjamin Franklin
What is liberty as defined in our Constitution worth if a president takes it upon himself to disobey his own oath of office to uphold and defend that document. What if he openly breaks the laws designed to protect our liberty in the name of protecting those same liberties? What if Congress consistently helps him break the law? Isn't that an oxymoron !
We recruit our citizens to join the military to protect our nation and to defend our Constitution. They are willing to die to do so. Are we who remain at home assumed to be less brave? Are we somehow expected to hand over, without a whimper the very rights our soldiers are being asked to die to protect? Another oxymoron it appears.
Bush and Congress claim to be protecting us from terrorism. But at what cost and are we really safer?
What will those soldiers come home to after our own government trashes what they are fighting to protect?
Whose job is it to protect those same liberties here at home while others protect them with their lives abroad?
* The President
* Congress
* The Courts
If they fail to do so they are NOT patriots. Our famous patriots who spoke those lines above were not soldiers, they were statesmen and founders of this nation. The ancestral beginnings of our government. They understood what was needed to assure the preservation of our democracy. We need the undivided loyalty of our three branches of government to continue the fight to preserve our Constitution at home, even as bombs fall abroad.
If any one of these fail us, as had the present administration, we are to rely on the other two to serve as check and balance to keep our nation in balance. If two of the above fail us, we need even more loyalty to the Constitution from the other, remaining check.
When all three fail us, bring the soldiers home for they no longer have anything to fight for. To ask them to continue to die for a Constitution that our own government no longer considers sacred would be nothing but a disgrace to those brave men and women in uniform. A lie that disrespects their sacrifices since the founding of America.
Patriotism is being willing to accept a risk in order to protect our nation and constitution in spite of the dangers we face. No one who is willing to allow the compromise of our Constitution in the face of danger is a patriot.

Rev Wright Was a Patriot
Applause to Paul Kruger for taking action by writing this article. Paul Kruger is correct that some Presidents and some (most?) members of Congress have made a mockery of our Constitution. It is extremely sad that the American people do not rise against the government. The media have aided some members of Congress or the President to ignore stories or slant them in a way that affect emotion rather than logical reasoning. The affect of the media has increased substantial with the growth of cable and the Internet. If Obama voted against FISA, the media would have constantly replayed the McCain charges of Obama does not care about your safety. He was in a no win situation. I am more interested in prosecuting government officials that ordered illegal wiretaps; however, anyone in Congress that would propose actions against Bush would have a difficult time. The Republicans and MSM would play on the fears of 9/11. Rep. John Conyers announced today that he would hold Judiciary Committee hearings next week on the "imperial" Bush presidency. Impeachment was not in his wording, but it was a step forward. Searching the Internet only results in a few sites with the information. I did not find any mainstream media sites. Rev Wright preached about the atrocities the United States has committed throughout the world. For people that never took the time to listen to his entire sermons or attempt to understand what he was say have branded Rev Wright as not being patriotic, being a racists, and many other derogatory comments. It took great courage to preach sermons about social injustices. It took great courage to not back down on his "G** Damn" American sermon. Most people do not realize he was condemning the Bush administration, not the American people. http://www.alternet.org/blogs/themix/36864/?comments=view&cID=128524&pID=128259 Top Methodist leader wants Bush - a Methodist - impeached - May 30, 2006. Jim Winkler, General Secretary, United Methodist Board of Church and Society has been "very" vocal in his opposition to the war in Iraq. "These are actions far more serious than a failed land deal on the White River or a sexual indiscretion with a White House intern," Winkler said, comparing Bush to Clinton, whose impeachment was never urged by Winkler's agency. Had the Iraq war been led by John Kerry or Al Gore, Winkler surmised, the "Limbaughs and Gingriches of the world would be screaming for their impeachment." by Laura Kay (0 articles, 0 quicklinks, 0 diaries, 36 comments) on Thursday, Jul 17, 2008 at 6:41:57 PM

Patriot
Dennis Kucinich is the only patriot left in Congress. Everyone else bows down to Big Business and Israel. I'm sick of the Obama apologists always saying if he voted the right way the media would bash him for it. So what the hell does that matter. Real patriots don't give a damn if the media criticizes them. Real patriots defend the US Constitution and the people of this country. Real patriots do what's right because it's right not because its popular with the media or the political establishment. Dennis Kucinich doesn't give a sh*t what the media says and obviously neither do the people of his district since they continue to reelect Dennis Kucinich to Congress. His district is not a liberal district either. The previous congressman from his district was a Republican. by Ty (0 articles, 0 quicklinks, 0 diaries, 938 comments [7 recommended, 0 rejected]) on Saturday, Jul 19, 2008 at 11:48:20 AM
