A New Moon occurs when the Sun and Moon come into alignment in the same part of the sky.   When two planets align like this, astrology calls it a conjunction--two energies that merge.   The Sun symbolizes our life force; the Moon symbolizes our experience of how that life force plays out in our lives.   The Sun symbolizes who we think we are while the Moon reflects on what we need.   Just as when the left and right brains work together, a New Moon unites the conscious self (Sun) with the unconscious self (Moon).

The Sun rules our 3rd chakra--our solar plexus--the energy center that coordinates how we express ourselves in the world, as well as our opinions and judgments about ourselves and others.   The Moon rules our 6th chakra--our third eye--the energy center of the creative imagination, the place where our story about life is created.     When these two centers holding our needs and opinions act together, they create our reality.

A New Moon is always a time when something hidden in the unconscious quickens and gestates.   A new seed is planted.   Although our conscious mind would have it that it plants a seed, the truth is that the unconscious already has that seed waiting there for the conscious spark of light and life to awaken it.   Like an egg that needs a sperm to quicken it, a New Moon's seed is quickened by this union of cosmic opposites.   Everything begins in the Unconscious.

Aquarius New Moon

Aquarius is the sign of how our collective Mind is enlarged to accept new ideas and ways of being. When Uranus, the ruler of Aquarius, traveled through Aquarius from 1996-2003, the technological revolution created the freedom to connect with the whole world, where we share ideas and find our groups. Time and space were altered and new ways of understanding the world grew more acceptable.

When the Sun is in Aquarius, the fixed air sign of Winter in the North, we need to hold space, observe the energies and envision plans for the coming year.     This New Moon in Aquarius offers us a chance to work together creating a plan for a better future.

Freedom is the essence of the sign of Aquarius, a freedom that comes from our essential archetypal nature.   Our religions and our philosophies call it "free will'.    Humanity has been given the freedom of choice (although to hear some politicians, it only applies to men).   But when our thoughts and feelings, beliefs and customs are shaped by our culture and our religion, are we really free?

Carl Jung differentiates between individuality and being individuated.   The patriarchy and the West value individuality, our ability to operate alone, as a single unit.   And we have taken this idea and gone too far with it, causing death and destruction in the name of individual /corporate liberty.    Individuation is the process where we become uniquely our Self; when we leave behind our socialization and become the unique person our soul wants us to be.   Our true freedom and our wholeness lie in our individuation.

Aquarius is called the sign of the Group, and for those of you who have worked in groups, you know the difference between a group where everyone tries to push their own needs and agendas (individuality) and those groups where people are mature enough to step away from their private agendas and use their talents for the good of the whole (individuation) and for the Truth of the situation.   As we leave patriarchal thinking--which engages in domination and hierarchy--behind, we will engage with the group in a more holistic fashion where everyone is equal, everyone gets a chance to lead and everyone has something different to offer.   I always think of King Arthur's Round Table when I think of Aquarius--where nobody is above anyone else and where all work together for the betterment of the kingdom.

Aquarius is also the sign of our goals and visions for the future.   Who do you share your goals with?   What is your vision of the future?   Our vision (the Moon/3rd Eye) can either be shaped by our culture or by our free will.   We can choose how we see our future if we take time to understand how the old story we have of ourselves is really a story of how well we've lived up to patriarchal expectations.   These stories have often been shaped by negative opinions, false expectations and failures in achieving our goals.   These stories undermine our belief in ourselves and our worth as well as the hope of a different and better future.
