I find this article to be totally specious, in fact no more than a corporate journalist's hatchet job! Not even qualifying or identifying the sources makes it more of a "run it up the flag pole and see who doesn't salute" kind of story, as such: bad journalism and even worse politics....
I believe Dr. Dean is still very much in the running for HHS. The fact is that American's health needs someone of his caliber as HHS Secretary, and face it: THERE ISN'T ANYONE ELSE OF HIS CALIBER AROUND.
Abrasive with Congress? So what? That is what I would want in a Cabinet member, especially one dealing with the most corporate-abused regulatory apparatus in the USA: the FDA. Besides, have you ever noticed that many of the brightest people seem abrasive to those who are less cerebrally endowed?
Anyway, I don't want to see a Congressional Schmooze at FDA. Not even Dr. Von Eschenbach, a urologist who came to the FDA after being Director of the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Texas, who perpetuated the Corporate Manipulation of the FDA, was any kind of "Congressional Schmooze," as if that meant anything in the context of Cabinet selections....
Either Politico.com has some very trivial and/or superficial sources, or they are trying to spin some political realities of their own, which as a Journalist and Editor myself, I understand but don't respect at all. I think POLITICO ought to write a new article that is 90% fact and 10% speculation, instead of the other way around.
And oh, but of course; while there is that vast concern and profound interest right now over Cabinet choices among the arm chair pundits and Wednesday morning quarterbacks, that doesn't justify abandoning all pretext at accuracy in the journalistic quarters.
If these are credible sources, without giving away their identities, POLITICO could qualify or explain their level of credibility and their credentials, eh?
Similarly, another pundit-type source said Bill Richardson, New Mexico's Governor, was being considered for Interior Secretary. I know Richardson well, and am certain that he would only consider Secretary of State to leave the New Mexico Govenor's Chair; he would be a damned good Secretary of State at that, better in my opinion, than other names like Colin Powell (who I personally don't believe deserves any Cabinet seat at all, unless Obama is prepared to abandon much of the international credibility he has amassed thus far), John Kerry, Richard Lugar, Hillary Clinton, Richard Holbrooke, or Al Gore (although I must admit the Washington Post Editorial to that effect two days ago was very convincing)
But don't just listen to me!

You couldn't be more wrong. Without Howard Dean there would be no Barack Obama.
Howard Dean created the template for Barack Obama's election to the presidency. He created a grassroots organization for his primary run for President in 2004 and he inspired folks just as Barack Obama did.
The difference is that Obama ran after six years of Republican failure and when the tide had turned against the far right agenda of Bush and the failed Republican party.
