When a government is immune to public opinion because it has the military power and the propaganda machine to intimidate the people, no conspiracy is needed. A conspiracy theory claims an official line is false. Officialdom has seen the need to issue a false account as misinformation to guard its secrets, and is deliberate propaganda intended for the gullible. The main advantage of conspiracy theories is that they offer a more coherent explanation of more phenomena than the official line. The growing power of right wing authoritarian ideology in the west suggests that its agents in government may be testing how far they can get without the public responding. Since the onset of the cold war era, the US Government has increasingly shown a readiness to sponsor illegal, undemocratic and even immoral activities at home and abroad.
