Astronomy Picture of the Day: One of the largest auroral displays in recent years appeared over far northern locations including the border between Norway and Russia, and are pictured in this 2-minute time-lapse movie in which auroras flow over snow covered landscapes, trees, clouds, mountains and lakes near Kirkenes, Norway. High energy particles strike the Earth's atmosphere, causing the air to glow green as electrons recombine with their oxygen hosts. With the Sun expected to become more active over the next few years, there may be many opportunities to see similarly spectacular auroras much closer to the equator. |
