| Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld initially opposed a request by Secretary of State Colin L. Powell, and Afghanistan's new leaders, for a sizable peacekeeping force. The Bush Administration deployed only 8,000 American troops, in a purely in a combat role, as Bush shifted U.S. forces and the world's attention to Iraq. Now the U.S. is at real risk of losing Afghanistan to the people who really did attack the U.S. on 9/11. |
