The policy is known as 'stop-loss' -- and it's become an unwelcome and bitterly-resented by-product of the American war in Iraq. It's also unofficially known as the 'back-door draft' because the U.S. military is exploiting a loophole in soldiers' contracts to retain them in the service beyond their designated term and to prohibit them from retiring. And it is the subject of a new film to hit theatres with 4,000 US dead.
