By closing down News of the World, the scandal-driven London tabloid that itself became engulfed by scandal, Murdoch is taking a drastic step that is virtually without precedent. The 2.6 million circulation News of the World paper is valued at about $650 million, or 1.4 percent of the parent company's market value. Frank Sesno, director of GWU's School of Media and Public Affairs says of Murdoch, ' He is in deep damage-control mode right now. This is his Titanic hitting the iceberg, and he has to worry about the rest of the fleet behind him.' |
