Vivekananda was an important Indian teacher who came to this country just over a century ago and taught Hindu meditation practice and religious philosophy Our reading comes from a series of lectures he gave, which then served as the Introduction to his translation of the Yoga Sutras by Patanjali (c. 150 CE). The book is entitled Raja Yoga (New York: Ramakrishna-Vivekananda Center, 1955). Raja Yoga means the 'discipline of meditation practice,' as opposed to Hatha Yoga, which means the 'discipline of physical stretching exercises.' |
