|In eleventh-hour negotiations Saturday, union security officers and the Port of Portland averted a strike set for 6 a.m. Sunday that officials had said would cause an economic disaster. An even more serious threat looms, as longshore union members consider a final contract offer expiring Wednesday from Northwest grain terminal owners. An impasse in those talks could result in a lockout or strike at terminals that handle a quarter of the nation's grain exports.|
