One of America's most respected private space entrepreneurs has revealed that he hopes to see an 'oasis' settlement built on Mars that could eventually accommodate up to 80,000 pioneers. 'Then it seemed ridiculous because there were no rockets, no infrastructure and NASA was the only game in town - and it had no schedule for exploring Mars. But with my work, and many others working in the private sector, the mission is coming closer to reality. 'On Mars you can start a self-sustaining civilization and grow it into something really big,' he recently told a closed meeting of the 146-year-old society, which awarded him a gold medal for his contribution to space exploration. Over several generations, the new Martians would extend their bubble environment until it reached a healthy capacity. He estimates that this should ultimately be the size of a small city - about 80,000 people.
