When Occupy SF protesters were criticized for urinating on the sidewalk, they complained that there were no bathrooms at Justin Herman Plaza. Hearing that, supporters, reportedly including some of the labor unions, brought in portable toilets and installed them at each end of the campground.
That's fine except no one apparently made arrangements to empty them. Friday morning at 8:30, the potties at Spear were overflowing onto the sidewalk and into the street. The location, right next to the regular street vendors and on the pathway for the commuter crowds coming from the ferry, made it especially unpleasant. City officials, of course, used it to make their case that the campground is a filthy, urine-soaked mess, which has been their rational for closing it down. |
