| M. King Hubbert, working for Shell Oil, postulated that petroleum reserves were about to 'peak,' thus the phrase Peak Oil. Since 1956 oil companies (Shell disputed his assertion) and politicians avoid discussing predictions. Instead go for friendlier topics such as gas tax holidays and drilling in Alaska.
