When Nancy Sampson's ALS symptoms progressed she lost her ability to speak and move, except for slight head movements. Experiments with an expensive, speech-generating device were unsuccessful, and she and her husband felt hopeless. Then visiting friends and artists, Rick Roberts and Maria Thomas, came up with a creative, ingenious and inexpensive idea. Overnight, Nancy could "talk" again with her family and her friends! Their idea is shared openly with anyone who wants it, through a Creative Commons license.
