In October 2009, then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi stated that a new national VAT was "on the table" to help the federal government garner needed revenues. After her speech the Americans for Tax Reform (ATR) group urged the public to contact their members of Congress to oppose this potential measure. President Barack Obama was reported to be open to a national VAT. One day later, US Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner stated that President Obama does not support a VAT. The U.S. has tried -- and failed -- to neutralize foreign VATs highlights America's attempts to neutralize our now-$500B trade disadvantage for 50 years.
Jim Clifton, Gallup Chairman's November 2009 interview The Next Generation of Leadership starts with the following quote: "The old rules still apply. But to win in the new world, leaders must understand their constituents' state of mind, says Gallup's chairman and CEO."
