Should drugs be decrimninalized or legalized?

Drugs alter the mind.  They are essentially an escape from reality, though some drugs can also be used to alter a physical state, such as methamphetimines used as "speed" to over ride the body's need for sleep.

Many are now calling for drugs to be either decriminalized or legalized.  They cite as their primary argument that the "war on drugs" is a failed experiement or ideology for various reasons and that great amounts of revenue could be raised by legalizing all drugs.  Many hypothetical arguments are made to rationalize or justify this position.

On the other side, every country in the world has outlawed drugs on the premise that they can tear apart the fabrics of society.  There are some minor exceptions:  The Netherlands legalized regulated marijuana, but has recently made the laws more restrictive stringent due to health and social concerns.  Australia has heroin distribution centers and shooting galleries for those certified as addicts.

Here on OpEdNews, many extholl the virtues of drugs and drug use.  No one seems to be speaking out against those who are arguing for the legalization or decriminalization of drugs.

How do you feel about this issue?

All drugs should remain illegal.
Only marijuana should be decriminalized across the board,
Marijuana should be decriminalized only for medical uses.
All drugs should be legalized.
Only natural drugs should be legalized, not manufactured drugs
Like, man, I'm so f*cked up now I can't think about this right now.
No opinion one way or the other.

The Old Codger today is an old, cynical, cantankerous, contrarian who enjoys the occasional bottle of Jack Daniels. He works in a university of some repute attempting to teach writing, critical thinking and logic, all three of which are daunting (more...)
