Should Progressives Form Their Own Party?

The two party system seems barely functional.  An effective third party, holding the balance of votes on critical issues, could have considerable influence. The huge swing to the Dems in 2008, with subsequent disappointment of many voters, means there are potential voters out there who are looking for a viable third option.  Could Progressives provide that option?  Others have tried,  with no outstanding success.  As well, some say the system itself is no longer working, and a complete overhaul is the first priority.   What do you think?  (Please give reasons where possible.)
