Poll: Follow up to "Should Obama Use Bush's Powers to Restore America?"
On 8/06/08 I posted this article and poll floating the idea that Barack Obama should use the dictatorial powers he (if elected)will assume from George Bush, to undo the damage done to the Constitution over the last eight years. The responses were overwhelmingly negative, so I'd like to revisit my original proposal, answer some of the objections, ask some questions, and add some conditions and observations. Then we'll see how many of you (if any) change your attitudes. Our sorry march to a fascist dictatorship began in earnest with the election of Ronald Reagan, and has sped up dramatically under George Bush. We are right now at the point where, with one signature, our Democratic Republic will pass into memory. Those of you who insist that we must use the ballot box to defeat those in Congress who enabled Bush to accumulate so much power, either through action or inaction, should redouble your efforts, but ask yourselves this--how many election cycles will it take (especially with the media and big- moneyed interests arrayed against you) to accomplish your goal, and do you really think you have enough time? For a long while, I was in favor of massive strikes and acts of civil disobedience. coordinated to force the government to bend to our will, but now see that they would certainly be met with a violent response and large loss of life, and might actually precipitate that final presidential decree that seals our doom. That leaves three options: Capitulation, and the end of "The Grand Experiment"; Armed revolution, which would certainly destroy us; or a patriotic President using dictatorial powers in an opposite manner from their original intent. Now to the most common objections: that no one should ever possess these powers, much less be trusted with them; that the powers are unconstitutional; and that the "ends can't justify the means". In my opinion, these are all true, but you must remember that George Bush already has these powers, and his successor will inherit them, so these points are largely moot. And, just how do you propose they be taken away? And, how far will your ethics bend if using these powers presently in place was the only viable, bloodless option left to save our form of government? Granted, simply throwing people into Kansas internment camps won't cure our ills. An action such as that must be part of a larger effort, and this is what I suggest: 1) Inter every member of Congress guilty of enabling the dismantling of our Constitution. Trust me-- they can be replaced. 2) Call for an immediate constitutional convention to re-write that document in clear, precise language to eliminate the possibility that control our government can ever again be taken out of the hands of the citizens. (There are literally hundreds of things that need to be addressed).
{ coincidentally and incidentally, on 8/08/08, John D Herrera published a poll on the Article V Convention. If you haven't yet done so, get over there and vote}
3) Abolish the Federal Reserve for all time, so that we regain control of our money supply. 4) Inter the heads of the big financial houses and corporations who drive our murderous, imperialistic foreign policy. 5) Break up the monopolistic media by any means necessary. 6) Take control of the defense industry as well as the energy industry, at least until the new Constitution is ratified. 7) Seize all assets necessary to eliminate their use against reform. Those steps, and others, would remove most obstacles from the path of reform, which might not otherwise be possible, and should make it possible to have a new, much safer Constitution in place within four years. Bloodlessly. In this different light, does my suggestion seem more palatable?
