Is Barack Obama moving too far to the right just to be elected?

Today, Barack Obama announced if elected he would expand President Bush’s Faith-Based Initiative programs. In a move seen as reaching out to evangelical voters, Obama announced plans to enhance Bush's program that steers federal social service dollars to religious groups. Included is his support of some ability to hire and fire based on faith.

In recent days, Obama has been accused of moving to the center and triangulating, a course and tactic that Bill Clinton used to get elected, and flip-flopping on many positions he held during the protracted, 16 month, Democratic primary.

A sure-fire target for controversy, many, such as the Americans United for Separation of Church and State group believes Obama's proposed expansion of this program will undermined civil rights, civil liberties and directly contradicts his pledge to honor the separation of church and state.

However, others believe this is a two-prong part of Obama’s tacking to the center and merely fulfilling his promise to reach out to forgotten communities, the poor and underprivileged – if elected – through grassroots outreach programs localized by what he calls “Neighborhood Partnerships.”

The question: Should Obama continue his perceived move to the center to attract independent voters and disenfranchised evangelical voters to win the general election?

Yes, it is necessary to win back the White House.
No, Obama should honor his original positions and not flip-flop.
