Is it really the case that many Americans think Iran has to be attacked in order to stop it developing nuclear technology?

::::::::

the Huffington post has reached new heights of stench. they have obviously not heard the news about neocons losing the elections. nor about the US' waning global influence. not even the financial crisis, one would guess. In a megalomanic article entitled:

Needing Coercive Diplomacy to Deal with Iran

they state the following:

"American projection of power and its ability to deter its enemies -- be they states or non-state armed groups such as Al Qaeda or Hezbollah -- are critical components of American defense policy. President-elect Obama will face a number of national security issues when he takes office in January... The most pressing crisis that he will need to deal with come day one, however, will be Iran's nuclear weapons program...
President-elect Obama must re-introduce coercive diplomacy as its chief strategy for negotiations with the Iranians. This tactic has proven time and again to be one of America's most effective tools. An Obama administration must begin direct talks with the Iranians, and make them understand that under no circumstances will it allow Iran to develop a nuclear capability. It must be made clear that the use of force is still most definitely on the table. Without the coercive threat of force, diplomacy with Iran will surely fail...
Allowing Iran to go nuclear would cause immeasurably destructive consequences to the United States and its projection of power in the world. It is without question that the Israeli-Palestinian conflict as well as the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan must be high on Obama's agenda, but before any other major foreign policy issue is dealt with by the new administration, the Iranian crisis must be effectively addressed once and for all. America's reputation and the world's security depend on it."

Well, where does one start with That kind of a mindset? There is a deliberate, naked quest for world domination shining through this piece. What can one compare it with other than Britain and Germany, in recent history?

I have never lived in the US, and am not sure about the standing of this source, but the article is essentially about the Project for New American Century. Its 'knight' is still the vice president. And it's laying claim to the 'voice of reason' mantle prior to  Obama's christening as president.

Iran's access to scientific knowledge is portrayed as the greatest threat to the very existence of USA - an IMMEDIATE threat that must be dealt with before Iraq, Al Qeda, Afghanistan and Palestine.

I would love to hear from our American friends about the place of such ideology in American society today. Is it really the case that many Americans think Iran has to be attacked in order to stop it developing nuclear technology?

An average Iranian with a keen interest in international affairs.
