Everyone has a right to say what they think and air their views. I listen to Pacifica Radio as often as I can. They have, bar none, the best reporting of any news and talk radio programming in existence. With shows like Democracy Now we owe them a debt of gratitude too big to ever pay.
At the same time, liberals have a challenge to remain focused on key issues and to avoid fragmentation. There are so many possible "good' causes being taken up by thinking progressives that we risk the chance of diluting our efforts and being easily divided and conquered if we focus on marginal issues. Today we are facing some of the most difficult challenges not only as progressives but also as a human race. The list of critical issues is long and includes such essential efforts as fighting climate change, struggling against the corporate oligarchy state, corruption in politics, a failing health care system that allows 45,000 people a year to die needlessly, wars in three foreign nations, peak oil and its potential consequences, biogenetic tampering with our food supply and more.
So when I hear a liberal progressive talk show host inventing yet another cause I become very concerned.
And that is exactly what happened today in KPFT, Houston's Pacifica radio news station. On Living Art there was a female host (I never caught her name) who joined the regular host, Michael Woodson, who squawked and whined about how NASA's mission to crash two space crafts on the lunar surface was a horrid development. She was not concerned about the money spent that could be spent on healthcare or other important issues we face. She was not concerned that the moon could become a military base. Her avid and vitriolic remarks focused only on the integrity of the moon itself. She was highly offended that the pristine moon, that has been there a few billion years, was now being blemished by two spacecrafts crashing into its surface and disturbing the moon dust. She was livid and could not control her disdain for "them." That would be those horrible NASA scientists who take the dust on the moon for granted and who should keep their hands (and spaceships) to themselves and not mar the beautiful undisturbed moon dust. She denounced this action as if it were a bomb dropped on innocent victims in an illegal war. She howled and bemoaned the fate of the moon now under attack by technology. She was unable to control her emotion and kept returning to this issue throughout the broadcast.
Geez! When will liberals understand that they cannot coddle every one of their whims and turn them into progressive causes against an unseen enemy embodied in anything the "government" or "they" do? It is exactly this kind of liberal that hurts the progressive cause to no end. By diverting our attention from real issues we are diluted by this nonsense and driven away from our real priorities. These so-called progressives are a detriment to the real progressive causes for which we must fight with vigor and honor. I have been a progressive my entire life. I am a very left wing person who detests the outrages perpetrated on ordinary people by the elite oligarchs who corrupt our government and politicians. But hey, I don't care if they crash a couple spaceships on the moon in search of water. In fact, I think it may be a good idea. To complain and whine about every little thing that bothers one just because it was done by "THEM" is a huge detriment to the overall progressive cause. It is arrogant, selfish and quite frankly, stupid. While I respect a person's right to express their opinion, I hardly think that an opinion like this one deserves anything but ridicule. This person obviously has no idea on earth what our real problems are, how we must unite to fight a common enemy and how silly and childish she sounds. I can only hope that she is never invited on KPFT again and never given a microphone anywhere on earth (or on the moon). As a leftist and progressive I am embarrassed by people like her.
