The Democrats now have a 32 seat majority in the House of Representatives. But the House isn't very powerful. Between the Senate and the Presidential veto, anything the House passes can be easily blocked. In the Senate there are now 51 Democrats and 49 Republicans. That means that the Republicans only have to kill 3 Democratic Senators in order to regain their majority.
As we learned with the assassinations of JFK and RFK, Secret Service protection doesn't seem to work as well for Democrats as it does for Republicans.
Since the Republicans control the covert operations departments of the intelligence agencies, they can easily arrange for a few deaths to appear to be accidental.
They might be the result of a lone nut terrorist like the anthrax killer. They might be the result of a mysterious single-car "accident" or plane crash, as with Paul Wellstone or John Kennedy, Jr. Or they might appear to be a mugging gone wrong, where the victim's wallet was lifted after they were killed execution-style with two shots to the head.
Or perhaps some Senators can be framed or blackmailed and forced to resign.
It is important to remember that trillions of dollars in no-bid war profiteering contracts are at stake here. The Democrats have already said that they would like to restore Congressional oversight of expenditures in Iraq, and the Republicans aren't likely to permit that. The cost of preventing it would be miniscule compared to the actual sums of money involved.
I like to gamble, but I wouldn't bet a plugged nickel that the Democrats retain their Senate majority through June 2007. I'd be very surprised if two didn't meet with fatal "accidents" or were "suicided" by January, and another one died soon afterwards.
I hope I'm wrong.
