May I briefly present two lines of evidence why we should withdraw all but token military forces from Afghanistan: (a) Historical-- Alexander the Great and more recently Russia could not pacify Afghanistan. How can we expect to? (b) Strategic-- For several reasons made evident in a source I am sure you are acquainted with, viz., Greg Mortensen's lectures this year throughout the United States recounting his intimate experience first-hand living with Afghanis, both Sunni and Shiite, iliving with Pashtun in Pakistan, and living with an Afghan group and observing the impotence of the widely detested Afghan "security" forces.
There is evidence that many, perhaps a majority, of Afghanis consider our Military to be foreign interlopers.
Finally, the Taliban are not monolithic, but rather a diverse group, and certainly not identical with al Qaeda, more to be identified
with the Pashtun in Pakistan. Thus financially strapped United States can ill afford useless expenditures, and our overextended Military needless loss of lives, in Afghanistan.
