Whenever I hear Republicans call Democrats elitist, I feel that I am living in some parallel universe where "elite" people with outstanding personal abilities, intellect, education, training and experience are not desirable attributes for our elected officials. So, since Republicans consider intellect, education and experience bad things, we are given a President who has to have his speeches written with phonetic spelling. The version of President Bush's UN General Assembly speech written with phonetically spelled words was accidentally placed on the UN website today.
The text, from which President Bush read as he spoke at the General Assembly podium today, was filled with phonetic spellings such as French President Sarkozy "[sar-KOzee]" and Zimbabwe President Mugabe "[moo-GAHbee] and Kyrgyzstan "[KEYRgeez-stan]" and Mauritania "[moor-EH-tain-ee-a]" and Caracas "[kah-RAH-kus].” Clearly Republicans think one doesn't have to know very much of anything about foreign countries in order to function as president. A President doesn't even need to recognize the correct spellings and pronunciations of important leaders, cities and nations around the world - even after serving in office for six years.
I don’t have the words to express my embarrassment…
