Sometimes I think I am in an echo chamber and I am hearing myself, over and over and over. Ok, so here I go again.
I think the far right and the far left are definitely out there. All you have to do is read a few sites like OEN, watch Fox, listen to the Big Radio Ape ugh, and you can hear from all sides. They are loud, irritating, get far more attention that they deserve but they ARE a minority. Most of us, Dems, Reps, conservatives, liberals exist more in the middle. Both parties must keep us segregated, after all if they did not, how would they hold to power? People that believe strongly in the right to life are probably going to consider themselves Republicans and their counter part, the R V Wade folks will be more comfortable with the Democrats. If you are wealthy, or want to be considered part of that group (and there are many of these people that don’t come close to wealthy but would never admit it) then concern for your money will shift you toward the right side of the isle. On the other hand, I have met only a small number of travelers, and I don’t mean people that take a week off and go somewhere but folks that are “on the road” for months or years, that are not very liberal. My family is almost entirely Republican, and the root is the religiosity that the R’s have sold so well, taxes, big government, and the “taint” on their idea of what it means to be a liberal. But-----and this is a big one, they are generous, honest, fun, smart, hard working, and all around good folks. Some years back, my brother-in-law was on a prison board and was told that a minor felon was to be released but that he had no place to go and could not be released. He calls my sister----this is 3 days before Christmas---and says they will have a guest for a few days and she says, ok that will work. How many good liberals would do that?
Some way, we must find a way that we can accommodate the right and left. Some way we must learn how to disagree without the need to vilify each other. The hate needs to be out right rejected, as well as the constant harping and negativity. You can read the same people, saying the same thing and encouraging each other, so that once you have read their comments in one piece, there is no need to read them in another. On this site, it is interesting how some have made 100’s and even 1000’s of comments but have offered few, if anything published by themselves. Is it a lack of their own ideas? I would guess some are just simply angry at their own lives and failures and their inability to control. But the rest, the majority need to move forward with new ideas, new commitment to solving problems as opposed to telling us what is wrong but offering nothing in return. In the President’s own words, “We are not red states or blue states, we are the United States”. We are also not good people and bad people but one people that must find a way out of our present dilemma.
