Rob Kall points out that the Democrats lost in the Nov. 6 local elections because the Democrats we elected to Congress are not doing what we elected them to do. Since that's the case, we, who elected them, have effectively lost the 2006 election. Our mandate to the Democrats was not fulfilled, the same as it wouldn't have been had the Republicans won the election.
The 2006 election was an expression of hope that the Democrats would accept the mandate we gave them to repair the damage the Republicans have done. They didn't do that. Because of that, we now have reason for a perverse confidence in our Congress.
Confidence that the Republicans will do the wrong thing, with firmness and conviction.
Confidence that the Democrats will do nothing, with firmness and conviction.
Confidence that with the election of a Democratic majority in Congress, we will still have a Republican controlled Congress.
Confidence in the pathetic hope that even if the Democrats act with firmness and conviction to do something, the best they can do is try to repair the damage the Republicans are doing a little bit faster than the Republicans can continue doing the damage.
There are reasons why the Democrats lost in the Nov. 6 local elections. The average voter, uninformed and misinformed about Republicans, is unaware of the misfeasance, malfeasance and nonfeasance of the Republicans. They go to the polls and vote on the equivalent of a coin toss. The person they last heard speak with firmness and conviction wins the toss.
A person who speaks and acts with firmness and conviction about doing the wrong thing will be chosen over a person who speaks and acts with no firmness and conviction about doing the right thing.
I have talked to people who are blind to the fact that they are being screwed over by George Bush. They are so proud of him for doing it because he does it with such firmness and conviction. People who are uninformed and misinformed about the nature of Republicans see the Democrat's lack of resolve and disdain for ideology, and they decide for the Republican conviction and resolve and their absolute belief in their destructive ideology. The issues, the right or wrong of it are irrelevant, its the false impression of leadership that so impresses, that makes the decision, even if it leads in the worst possible direction.
The best we can hope for is to keep trying to get Democrats elected, not to solve the problem, they've shown that they're not going to do that, but just to lessen the number of Republicans to the point where they won't have as much control of Congress. Its a process of diluting the poison to the point where it becomes less effective.
I would place my confidence in a Democrat, any Democrat, who would stand up and repeat the mandate we gave them with the 2006 election: No more cronyism, no more corruption, no more Iraq war, no more George Bush, no more Republicans. But, there is no such Democrat.
That's what we told the Democrats than and that's what we have to keep telling them now. You have to ask for two loaves to get one loaf. You have to ask for the elimination of all Republicans just to get them down to a manageable number.
